How It Works
Thulium lasers operate at a wavelength of 1927 nanometers, penetrating the skin to a depth of approximately 200-400 micrometers. This depth allows the laser to precisely target the epidermis and superficial dermis, effectively treating superficial epidermal problems without causing significant damage to the epidermis. The 1927nm fractional laser is characterized by using a fractional handpiece to focus the laser into a tiny spot (approximately 0.1-0.15mm in diameter) to irradiate the skin, achieving a non-ablative or micro-ablative effect, primarily used for skin rejuvenation and wrinkle reduction. If the laser irradiation time is long enough, a micro-ablative effect can occur. Shortening the irradiation time and reducing the energy density may create thermal coagulation vertical bands, thereby activating collagen and causing skin contraction.

Treatment Characteristics of Thulium Laser
Thulium laser (Tm:YAG) is an infrared laser. In the wavelength range of 400-2000nm, the laser penetration depth increases with the increase of wavelength. The skin penetration depth of 1927nm thulium laser is the deepest, the scattering effect is strong, and the thermal effect of dermal tissue is significant.
The main target tissue of 1927 thulium laser is water. Since the water content of dermis is higher than that of epidermis, the heat accumulation and temperature rise of dermis are higher than that of epidermis during thulium laser treatment. Influenced by traditional CO2 laser design, most commonly used infrared lasers are fractional lasers. There are two transmission methods: fiber optic transmission (1550nm, 1927nm), and optical fiber transmission (2940nm and 10600nm). This is because the longer-wavelength infrared lasers experience excessive losses in optical fiber transmission, necessitating the use of optical fiber transmission arms (at least for now).
Laser"penetration depth"and"treatment depth"can be two different things, often depending on the laser energy density.
During treatment, because 2940nm has the highest water absorption coefficient, when it reaches the epidermis, it is highly absorbed by the water-containing stratum corneum and papillary dermis. High laser energy can immediately cause exfoliation, vaporization, and charring in the epidermis. Therefore, during treatment, we cannot allow 2940nm erbium lasers to penetrate the dermis and form a"thermal coagulation zone."
The 10600nm laser has an absorption coefficient second only to 2940nm, allowing it to penetrate the epidermis. It primarily absorbs water in the dermis, allowing it to penetrate more easily with high-energy irradiation, causing micro-exfoliation and reaching the dermis. However, increasing the energy and exposure time can result in bleeding, charring, burns, and vaporization and exfoliation.
1550nm/1927nm are located in the near-infrared spectral range, which has two small peaks in water absorption. In comparison, water absorbs only one-sixth as much of the 1927 thulium laser as CO2. Therefore, while maintaining safe therapeutic energy, it can potentially penetrate deeper into the skin than CO2, avoiding vaporization and charring reactions. This means it avoids the intense damage to skin tissue that could lead to inflammatory reactions and stimulate melanin activation. Given this premise, the 1927, primarily used for thermal coagulation rather than ablative vaporization, can be considered a safer infrared laser, offering broader application prospects.
